Running a business - Adventure 1

Running a business

Start a tshirt company it’s so easy, they said. Just throw something on the shirt and it’ll sell, they said.

What they failed to say was that it would take time and money and it’s not easy at all. I’m no expert in running a business, but I thought it would be interesting to tell my tales of the adventures I’ve been on so far. Give a straight forward point of view on how not glamorous this is.

So let’s begin:

 Adventure #1

I don’t know how to use photoshop, illustrator or any other program that can make pretty designs. I use Microsoft paint. Yup. Oh, and I do a lot of copy and pasting. I’ve been fortunate enough that everything I’ve done so far has been pretty simple or just text.

About a year ago, I put the call out for a graphics designer to put together something that has been bouncing around in my head. I wanted them to take my logo and make it all geometric shaped.

Here is my logo:

I wanted the logo to be broken down into geometric shapes but still keeping the general shape and idea of the logo. I provided the following samples:

A team contacted me and insisted they knew exactly what I had in mind and that it was a common request. I wrote a very long detailed description and we went back and forth for a bit until they felt they were comfortable and could come up with something.

This is what they gave me:

As you can see, it's exactly like the samples provided and exactly what I had in mind (sarcasm).

And before anyone says I’m mean, this was the 3rd design they came up with.

Here are the others ones:

Design 1: uhh…..it’s the exact same logo but in white….and in black….

Design 2: slightly different, I guess. More curvier...

I don’t have a lot of patience and have developed a 3rd strike mentality. After that 3rd design, I ghosted them. (I paid them $20 CAD though, so I’m not entirely an asshole)

I figured that I'd never get that design out and I was venting to a friend of mine and showed her the exact same samples and she looked at them and was like ‘oh yah, that’s easy’

A few days later, she sends me the following:

Yass!!!! That is exactly what I was looking for. So much so, that it is now featured on this shirt:

Lesson learned: talk to your friends first before putting a call out to people who don’t know you and don’t know what you’re thinking.
